 ======================= Adjusting Brightness in R3D =========================

 =============================================================================

 ------ On First Startup -----------------------------------------------------

 Use F11 to go directly to the Control Panel/'Video' page

 When first adjusting the brightness restrict this to the Brightness slider
 in Control Panel. If you can get the required result using this then all
 the other settings should be left at their defaults.

 Gamma correction	.5 to 1.5	default 1.0
 Display contrast	.5 to 1.5	default 1.0
 Display brightness	-.5 to .5	default 0.0

 Note that it is best to stick with the defaults as changing them does no
 more than compress the dynamic range that is available with the hardware
 being used. As such this has nothing to do with R3D and the same advice
 applies if you should try to alter these values outside of R3D with an
 appropriate app for display purposes in general. In my experience chang-
 ing these three parameters away from the defaults only worsens any image
 being displayed. No amount of software intervention can make up for the
 limitations of a low quality screen or monitor.

 It should also be understood that any settings made within R3D only affect
 what is displayed within R3D's window. ALT-TABbing out of a window also
 reverts to the settings made for general use (although The R3D settings
 will be re-established when reactivating R3D) and this can be used to see
 the difference between any settings made for R3D compared with settings
 made for general use should they differ.

 If, with your system, dark areas are too dark due to the physical limit-
 ations with contrast of the monitor being used then try the following;

 In Control Panel select the 'Lighting' page where you can find;

 Compress brightness    [default 0]    [SLIDER]

 The slider allows a setting of between 0 to 140.

 Starting with a value of 40 is recommended.

 This can be set, instead, from the console.
 (To open the console press the key immediately below the ESC key.
  To close the console use the same key again.)

 On the command line enter;
   lc <val> where val should be a number between 0 and 140.

 To see it take effect immediately then first call the console with the
 SHIFT key depressed else it will not take effect until closing the
 console. Note that SHIFT should not be used if wanting to close the
 console as this, if used with it open, will resize it.

 The light compression setting fits the light levels into a range from the
 the value set to 255. If a value of 60 is used then this would lift a
 sector's light value of 64 to;  64 + (255 - 64) * (60/255), approx. 108.

 The method of finding the optimum value for 'lc', should it be required,
 depends on your card and monitor and should be fixed by trial and error.
 Once the best value has been determined then it need not be changed again.

       Control panel Buttons in Lighting page (introduced in v220-31)

 =============================================================================

 Following the inital adjustments outlined above the the further following
 options can be explored.

 A more Doom like lighting option has been added that can be selected in
 Control Panel/Lighting with three new buttons;

	'Torch light (no vertex)'
	'Vertex distance (no torch)'
	'Non-Linear'

 If using 'Torch light' then this automatically switches between being on
 or being off depending upon the light level being applied in different
 sectors (defined map areas). If going from a bright to a dark sector or
 when first starting a map where the player is in a dark sector then the
 torch light will be seen to fade up to its full value. Conversely it will
 fade down to being fully off when going from a dark to a bright sector.

 Note: selecting both torch light and vertex distance is not possible.

 This gives the following possible combinations;

 Torch   Vertex   Non-Linear          Description
 ____________________________________________________________________________
  OFF | OFF | OFF Even lighting with no distance darkening
  OFF | OFF | ON Sine curve modifies the degree of lighting.
  OFF | ON | OFF As default but dark areas more brightly lit "
  OFF | ON | ON Default - gives same lighting as with previous
                                       versions of Risen3D
   ON | OFF | OFF Doom like Torchlight only used
   ON | OFF | ON Gives most 'Doom like' result
 ____________________________________________________________________________

  Previously a 'distance darkening' method was used which was based on the
  player's distance from each vertex but this causes ugly floor or ceiling
  streaking in maps that have large or long subsectors with too few vtxs
  to allow lighting to be properly calculated. In scripted maps this has
  been avoided by carefully designing a map to allow this method to work but
  in pwads there can never be any guarantee that such sectors do not exist.

 ----- QUICK TORCHLIGHT CHANGE --------------

 Torchlight can be toggled on/off using the keyboard 't' when in game.
 This is useful if finding a map, such as in Deadall's epic2 map26, that
 works better with torchlight but where for the other maps it is not
 preferred. Toggling it to on will not change the default settings so on
 going from map26 to map27 then if the normal settings are torchlight off
 then this together with the other two settings will be reset on starting
 map27 (or if warping to any other map).

 ----- CHANGING THE DEFAULT SETTINGS -------

 Settings can only be changed when running a standard map that does not
 explicitly set the three values. This is generally the case with most
 wads but those excluded ar scripted maps or maps having values set with
 an SCP_ZOFF lump entry.

 When setting changes then whatever is set can be made as the defaults
 which will be applied generally by setting the button labelled;
 "On exit use these as defaults with all maps" to ON. This will only
 apply when exiting the Control Panel not when setting the button so
 accidentally setting this button to YES can be cancelled by changing it
 back to NO before exiting.

 Leaving it set to NO will mean the changes made will only apply to the
 map currently being run.
